SUPPORT LONDON UNDERGROUND AND TRADE UNION RIGHTS

The National Council of Left Unity yesterday (8 Feb) expressed its full solidarity with London Underground workers of the RMT and TSSA who are taking industrial action in defence of jobs, safety and a decent service to passengers.

The attempt to abolish 950 jobs is a huge attack on the Underground service, which would impact especially on disabled passengers, older and irregular users of the system.  It would make the Underground less safe operationally and increase the risk of attacks and harassment of passengers and staff.  These cuts will be  the forerunner to further cuts, job losses, attacks on working conditions and a massive asset stripping process.

It’s very encouraging that even in the face of the usual frenzied media attack on Underground workers, unions and Bob Crow personally, Londoners continue to support a properly staffed tube.  After all,  the Underground has never been busier or in more need of proper staffing.

Boris Johnson and the Government are now trying to outlaw effective trade unionism.  RMT Branch Secretary Mark Harding has been arrested and banned from union activity for operating a picket line, the TSSA union has been threatened with huge costs using EU anti-union legislation and David Cameron is threatening to ban strikes altogether on the Underground or to change anti-union laws to make it almost impossible for workers to vote for an effective strike. The Tory hatred of unions has been clearly revealed and is not being challenged by the Labour opposition.

Left Unity strongly encourages its members and supporters to spread the word and do all they can to support RMT, TSSA and  Hands Off London Transport.

    Comrades

We have to ask why was the strike called off after the success of the first week of strike action and the management making few if any concessions – the ticket office closures and job losses remain as proposed with management stating they might allow a few offices to remain open in major stations. Is this not a sell out? – The action of the underground workers shows the power of the organised working class while the rotten politics of their leaders means that defeat is likely to be imposed on the workforce.

I support the strikes, always have. You need someone down in the tube lines, with risks of overcrowding and crime. That scumbag Boris Johnson and his lies, where was he when they lost control of London? on holiday. What shit mayor.
