Bruce Whitehead is standing as Left Unity candidate in the City of Edinburgh Council by-election for Leith Walk ward on 10 September.
Two seats are being contested under the STV system (a first in Scotland) after the resignations of two councillors (SNP and Green) to pursue parliamentary careers.
Bruce stood for Left Unity in Edinburgh North & Leith in May and despite many left voters backing the SNP, won 122 votes from a standing start. Bruce made a strong showing in hustings debates and was consistently effective in putting across the Left Unity manifesto as the only socialist party standing.
The Scottish Socialist Party is also standing a candidate for the two-seat constituency, and Left Unity has agreed a reciprocal understanding to ask its supporters to give their second preference vote to the SSP candidate Natalie Reid.
