Homes for all: no more rough sleeper deaths

Last week a homeless man died in an underpass next to the Houses of Parliament. This week Britain enters a wave of freezing weather. The risk of further deaths is high and they will be a stain on the conscience of our government, whose policies and priorities make these totally avoidable tragedies happen.
Left Unity National Secretary, Felicity Dowling, said:
‘There must be no more rough sleeper deaths. As the cold weather hits our towns and cities, we call for public buildings to be kept open, warm and staffed all night.
In this wealthy economy it is the responsibility of government to respond to this crisis. This cold weather magnifies the exisiting homeless and housing crises, the fuel poverty of many, and the precarious food budgets of millions. All problems caused or exacerbated by this government.
Public resources must be directed to preserve life and dignity at this time.
We say: Open the buildings – Comandeer London’s empty speculative housing. It’s time for homes, food, warmth and dignity for all.’
