Left Unity is unlike other political parties. It’s run by activists from the bottom-up and transparency and democracy are at the heart of everything we do. All Left Unity policies are drawn up by policy commissions which are open to all members, before being voted on by conference. For once, your voice matters!

This section provides information about the different ways that you can get practically involved in addition to becoming a member:

Branches – Branches are the heart of the party – local hubs of activity and discussion. We encourage everyone to get involved in the branch that is nearest to where you live or work. However, if you have difficulty getting to a physical venue – for example, because you live in a remote place or have mobility difficulties, or through caring responsibilities – we are setting up an online branch, which will enable you to get involved through an online forum and other technologies, like Skype. However, our local branches are committed to being accessible, so if you have mobility difficulties or caring commitments but live near a local branch, you may want to get in touch with them to discuss your needs first.

Policy commissions – Policy commissions work collaboratively to draft party policies and are open to all signed up members of Left Unity. This is a great way to get involved and help shape the direction of the party. If you are passionate about particular issues or have special expertise in an area, this is definitely something to consider.

Caucuses – Left Unity recognises that in our unequal society, some voices are not as easily heard as others. For that reason, we have established separate caucuses for women, disabled members, LBGTQ members and young members. We are also in the process of setting up a black and minority ethnic members’ caucus. Caucuses encourage the self-organisation of party members who suffer from specific discrimination to enable them to have a collective voice within Left Unity, to take a lead in the party on these issues and to organise collectively in campaigns against oppression.

Calendar – The online calendar lists local and national events – most of which are open to non-members. This is where you can find out what’s going on – whether you are a long time member or just want to find out more and come along and meet us.

Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.
