Demonstrations across the UK as parliament debates Trump visit

Demonstrations against US president Donald Trump’s proposed state visit took place across the UK last night as parliament debated a near 2 million strong petition opposing the visit. The demonstrations were jointly organised with the One Day Without Us movement which sought to highlight the importance of migration and migrant workers. In central London on Parliament Square thousands came together under the banner Defend Migrants – Stop Trump. Left Unity participated in demonstrations in Brighton, Leeds, Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bournemouth.

The European Left Party meeting in Rome at the weekend agreed to support the ‘Stop Trump defend migrants’ demonstrations in the UK.  On behalf of its executive committee Andrew Burgin from Left Unity read out this statement.

“I bring greetings from the European Left Party – our meeting in Rome at the weekend agreed to support and send this message of solidarity.

In Trump we see the the true face of reaction – the racism, Islamophobia, misogyny, the suppression of democracy and dissent – we see the re-emergence of the far right. We have seen this before in history and we cannot allow it to happen again: now is the time to stop any opening towards fascism. The Trump presidency marks a new reactionary moment in world politics.

When we say – Stop Trump – we are saying many things – we are saying – stop racism, stop sexism, stop war, stop austerity, stop climate change. These are all struggles that we face together.

We send these greetings because we recognise that your fight is our fight.

We salute that mass demonstration in Barcelona on Saturday that saw more than 150,000 take to the streets of that city to defend migrants with the slogans:

‘Our home is your home’

‘Your struggle is our struggle’

Across Europe and across the world the far right is gaining ground. Brexit and Trump have given them confidence. We face the threat of Marine Le Pen in France, of Geert Wilders in The Netherlands – across the whole of Europe there are such movements.

A storm is coming and we must come together – to defend migrants and refugees and to defend each other. Our movement must be international: a new movement, a mass movement of international solidarity. And when Trump comes to Britain – we will stand with you, in protest across Europe.

Stop Trump – Solidarity.”
