After DWP’s fake benefit stories, sanctions should be scrapped
Responding to news that the DWP has admitted fabricating stories from benefit claimants on a leaflet, Salman Shaheen of Left Unity said:
“It’s no wonder the DWP has been caught making up tall tales when its rhetoric is so far from reality.
“The government claims benefit sanctions help people – but it can’t find a single example of this ever happening.
“The truth is that sanctions are a nasty form of punishment that leave people on the breadline for minor mistakes. And it’s often the DWP that made the mistake, not the claimant.
“The whole sanctions regime should be scrapped.”
