Dan Morgan, a former soldier, has called an anti-austerity protest in Trafalgar Square – and now other towns and cities – on May 4th. He set up a facebook group by himself and thousands have responded to his call. Here he outlines the progress made so far with the 99% against Austerity mobilisations.
Well that’s the amount of Facebook invites that have been sent out in two months. From a noble beginning, organising a protest against the government has now become a machine to help the suppressed and fight against the system in masses and in the courts.
It started with London (The Big One) and then came Cardiff and Edinburgh, uniting people, fighting against the austerity measures set against us by the government. This will be the largest mass gathering of the general population as individuals and not under the banner of a political party or union.
The 99% against Austerity movement would not have happened without the people themselves building it to what it is today. The core team comprises me (Dan Morgan), Kaz Allen (Transport), Raven Alexander, Chris Gare, Charis Hawkins, Barrie Lynes (Social Networking), and Elspeth Parris (Accounts). Also without a doubt there is a big input with planning and media from the Anonymous network. Then there is the community itself who are the ones who have spread the message about this day and built it to the size it has become.
Where do we stand? Basically three cities are planned for protests on the 4th of May with other protests organised in Southampton, Leeds, Tamworth and Luton by individuals. To give a number on expected attendees would not be easy as London alone is viral on the internet, with our own adverts on many other websites and publications internationally. There have been daily Twitter announcements, retweets, and Daily Mail journalist Sonia Poulton has been tweeting the event out to her followers too. We can only imagine that the numbers will be in the tens of thousands. Transport is available covering most cities across the country but people are advised to look for cheaper alternatives as tickets are costing £20 through the company that we are dealing with.
We have support from the USA, Canada and countries within South America: true solidarity has been achieved.

The 99% against Austerity has grown to be more than just a protest movement. It has now become a registered Not for Profit organisation, acting as a people’s unity (union). We are the organisation that recognises the power of the people in an age where a single voice is no longer enough. With this We are the 99% People’s Unity was created.
Where is the future taking us? With any revolutionary movement the people must stand together and work together and not let government and media propaganda get in the way. Our message is simple: it’s time for the people to take back the country and manage it properly. We support the creation of a new workers’ party and will work towards achieving this before the next general election. With austerity measures crippling 99% of the populace, we are your voice in your workplace and in your community as a whole. We oppose the austerity measures and politically we will fight back.
By supporting national protests and strike action across the country, we can show those that earn their living through tax evasion and cutting from the middle and working classes, that we will not take this any longer!

I want this for my children and for my childrens children. I will not stand still and watch this excuse for a government make a farce of what my Dad and his Dad worked so bloody hard to achieve. This is OUR country,it belongs to the people of OUR UNITED KINGDOM. GREAT BRITAIN!!!
Making a stand, the beginnings every conflict has a starting point
Why am I part of this? When I am actually financially OK (with a bit of belt-tightening). Because the constantly increasing distress of the people around me is hurting me so much I can hardly breathe. John Donne said many years ago ‘No man is an island’ – we cannot live in isolation and have any kind of meaningful life. My comfort cannot be comfortable when others are in real distress. There is ABSOLUTELY NO religious ideology in this movement but personally I am a Christian and I believe that the Bible has little concern for many of the repressive ideas that many christians (note the lower case) go on about but a massive concern for social justice – we are to support and care about the poor even more than we are to worship. That is my stance, it is what I believe in. I do not want to live in a world where compassion, empathy and concern have no place, I do not want to live in a world where the very concept of community is destroyed, I do not want to live in a world where only the rich are counted as ‘people’. I must therefore be part of trying to change the world I find myself in.
Well said Elspeth! I am in the same situation as you and feel exactly the same. However, I am confused as to which organisation to join: 99% or the proposed new party of the left, Left Unity. We are already in danger of splitting the vote and we haven’t even started!
Why not join both Susan – neither requires ‘membership’ and each supports the other. The 99% is a protest movement and Left Unity is a discussion over the formation of a new political party.
I am here because I believe that if we unite together we can make changes. It is our world after all. It is for every individual to take control as the powers that be fail us. We can not sit back and allow the bankers and goverments and all those who sit on the boards of ‘control’ take money directly from the old, the children and the mentaly and physically sick. Together we can be more powerfull that the goverments in power.
I am an 82 year’s old great grandmother who can all too vividly remember how my world changed overnight when I was an eight year’s old child and left a loving family in London to be evacuated with total strangers. Us evacuees. just like our servicemen and women, sacrificed so much for our country during the second world war. we just cannot allow self opinionated upstarts who know nothing about real life continue to destroy the very principles we hold dear. We need real men to bring real change and I can think of no one who fits this description more than Dan Morgan who is still a fighting the enemy but in a different battle. Step forward real men , your country desperately needs you. Now is your time to help throw these lesser men out of the government. See you on the 4th!!!!
We thought politicians ran the country for the greater good of the greatest number.
Not any more they don’t.
We thought that the political parties were elected such that those representing the majority view took control of Parliament.
Not under the current corrupt system, no.
We thought at least ‘The Opposition’, as its name suggests, would oppose what was quite obviously not in the interests of the majority.
Not really, no.
We thought that, say, over half of the voting population would feel that the system is fundamentally a fair one.
No, they do not.
We thought in conclusion, that what we wanted was a completely new system, without party politics controlling the desire for logical reason and making it impossible for logical and fair reasoning to be made manifest.
We now have the potential for this.
The seedcorn is there.
The people can represent the people; at least 99% of the people.
Here it is.
We can build upon this small beginning. Thank you, for providing the opportunity, Dan Morgan.
Yes Yes YES !
