Introducing the LU women’s caucus

The Left Unity Women’s caucus was created to facilitate the autonomous self-organisation of femwomen in Left Unity. This caucus exists to provide women with a safe space to organise, debate and discuss issues that are specific to the oppression of women in the context of capitalism and to enable this discussion to be represented on the National Committee and in the policies of Left Unity and campaigns that the group supports. The LU women’s caucus aims to provide a positive way for women to be involved in gender politics in a supportive atmosphere where women’s issues, their participation and activism are central focuses of the group.

To understand our oppression due to race and gender/sex and our exploitation as workers and to develop coherent responses to the situation is a fundamental prerequisite to ensuring liberation and equality of women. The caucus can serve to share information concerning campaigns of various women’s groups, develop ideas how to support them and to articulate policies addressing issues such as, job segregation, reproductive rights, violence against women, issues surrounding inequality in income and wealth between men and women, and the intersections of race, gender/sex, disability and class and how these various oppressions interact.

The women’s caucus is open to all those that self-define as women. Please join us, we need your ideas, activism and skills to build the caucus to ensure that issues specific to women’s oppression and exploitation remain at the forefront of Left Unity’s politics and policies.
