FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Left Unity has condemned Tory plans to introduce turnout thresholds for strike ballots as a ‘double standard’.
Bianca Todd of Left Unity said:
“The Tories claim there is no mandate for strikes on low turnouts – but look at the turnout in the last general election. Once you take the 65% turnout into account, only 23.5% of eligible voters supported the Conservatives.
“In the May local and European elections it will be even lower. Should politicians not be allowed to take office unless they have 50% of the overall vote?
“There’s a double standard at work here. It’s David Cameron who has no mandate. He has no mandate for cuts and no mandate to strengthen the already draconian anti-union laws.”
