Jon Duveen from Cambridgeshire NUT reports on Jeremy Corbyn’s speech at the first day of the NUT conference
Usually the Friday afternoon session of NUT Conference is a sedate affair where we go through installing the new president and some ‘general housekeeping’ issues. However this year it was very different. Conference rose to applaud the guest speaker, Jeremy Corbyn, the first time a Labour Party leader had addressed the NUT Conference. Jeremy started by making it clear that the LP would be campaigning against the Trade Union Bill and that if it was passed then a Government led by him would repeal it. Conference loudly applauded this commitment. He then moved onto the Governments recent White Paper on Education. He made it clear that schools needed to be accountable to their parents and the local community and that the LP would oppose the White Paper.
He identified three issues facing education, the rising class sizes, with half a million children being taught in classes over 30, the increasing teacher shortage and the lack of primary school places. The Government was spending money on a reorganisation of education that no-one wants and will not address these key issues but will allow money to flow to the companies that run these academy chains. Jeremy made it clear that the LP would work with parents and teachers to oppose the White Paper. This commitment is the opening that the local activists need.
The left, including Left Unity, should be in the forefront of a campaign against the Government proposals. A campaign that can draw in the local CLPs and parents as well as trade unionists that has a real possibility of seriously challenging the Government’s White Paper.
Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.

Love this man, a true socialist. He is the essence of the Labour Party.
It would be a good opportunity for the conference to ask all teachers of sixth form students to encourage them to register to vote, because with them Mr. Corbyn stands a chance to break through the electoral traps being set by the Tory party to keep him out of office through jerrymandering. Mr. Corbyn and Mr Sanders in America give me hope.
Thanks Ros. I am a Labour Candidate in the locals and will say that we will regret the loss of sharing Education with local authorities and the attempt to run all schools from Whitehall especially where profit making organisations are given the schools. I fully support the Corbyn leadership and Momentum .
Ros Curwood:
Fantastic idea! We need to get through to these young people the importance of registering to vote and then actually going out and voting. Thanks for raising it this important issue.
Left Unity Organisation and Team, your great work inspire us.
