Scunthorpe Left Unity had our first meeting on Saturday, there were eight
of us and some sent apologies. A great mix of ages, a pretty good gender
balance and a spectrum of political backgrounds. The discussion was
extremely positive, key issues were around our relationship with the
Labour Party and what we do locally to involve people in activity and
discussion.
The Left Unity statement was well received, leading to a discussion about
when it would be right to stand candidates for election. All felt that we
must become a thorn in the side of Labour but be careful that we do not
immerse ourselves in electoral politics, meaningful activity is the
key. We agreed to work alongside Youth Workers and young people in
Scunthorpe in building the next stage of the campaign in defence of Youth
Services.
We also agreed that we we will explore the possibility of screening Spirit
of 45 in Scunthorpe.
The meeting felt very inclusive, all present contributing in a very
positive way. We acknowledged that people from different left
organisations will become involved and agreed that we will welcome them
all, but ask everybody to leave their paper sales and recruiting speeches
outside the room.
