Salman Shaheen of Left Unity said:
“It’s only a month since Ed Miliband said he would ‘never try to out-UKIP UKIP’. Yet today he has made a pledge to take benefits away from migrants for at least two years after their arrival.
“This is pandering to the myth of ‘benefits tourism’ when most people come to work. It will leave people homeless and penniless just for crossing a border. Miliband is getting into a bidding war with UKIP that will only drag politics further to the right.
“We need a political party that will stand up for migrants and that is one of the reasons why Left Unity exists. We challenge other parties’ racist scapegoating and support freedom of movement.”
