Planned budget surplus law would ‘institutionalise austerity’

Responding to George Osborne’s announcement of a proposed ‘budget surplus law’, Salman Shaheen of Left Unity said:

“This dangerous law will legally institutionalise austerity, whether in boom times or bust.

“A permanent surplus in government coffers will mean a deficit elsewhere – in our public services.

“A budget surplus means that taxpayers’ money is being taken, but not redistributed to the services and the people who need it.

“Osborne says he wants to ‘fix the roof while the sun is shining’. But this law will mean thousands more going without a roof over their head.”
