FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Responding to George Osborne’s announcement on tax evasion, Salman Shaheen of Left Unity said:
“Osborne’s measures are a step in the right direction to tackle tax evasion, but they will do nothing to prevent the kind of routine tax-dodging antics employed by Google, Amazon and Starbucks, which our lax laws allow.
“The government’s cuts to HMRC are only making the problem worse.
“Left Unity proposes a comprehensive set of measures to stamp out tax avoidance. In the first instance we would bring in a general anti tax avoidance principle to allow HMRC to challenge any transaction done for the primary purpose of tax avoidance. We also support a system of unitary taxation and full country by country reporting.”
