Motions for founding conference – section B Names for the organisation

Section B: Names for the organisation:

The deadline for submitting names for the new party has now been agreed as 16th November. Local groups can submit proposals and back them up with a statement of up to 50 words if so wished. Registered participants for the founding conference will choose a name using the supplementary vote system. However the following motion had already been received from Manchester South/Central prior to the motions deadline:

Due to Left Unity having name recognition (with over 10,000 people signing Ken Loach’s appeal), expressing our desire for it to unite the majority of the left (rather than being just one more of the “57 varieties” of far left organisation), taking into account the unpopularity of the word “party” among young people in particular, and with there being no obvious drawbacks of keeping Left Unity as a name, we resolve that the name Left Unity should be kept.

what does “left unity” mean to someone with no knowledge of left disunity? They can do their homework, read up on the subject? After all they should value their right to vote?

What are we doing to create unity on the left?

Huddersfield Left Unity have suggested DEMOCRATIC VOICE as a name for the party for the reasons below:

    • Taps into popular disgust with corrupt political system, an alternative voice to establishment austerity policies
    • Outward looking: not just appealing to existing left
    • Brands us as a movement, not just a party
    • States our aim: to democratise economy, all aspects of society
    • Electorally friendly, no negative baggage or trigger-words

Well, 16 November has been and gone, so that’s the name decided…I wonder if anything else will be as simple?

I think Left Unity is a terrible name, if we are attempting to be outward looking and to garner support from people who have not previously been active on the Left, If we decide to stand in elections it would be hopeless.
Why do I say this? Left Unity is o.k. to designate what we are initially trying to do but when we break out of the ghetto to reach previously uninvolved people it is useless. We need some thing that explains what we stand for and what makes us different from the pro-capitalist parties but not to frighten off potential support- Can I start this ball rolling by suggesting Peoples Democracy or anti-austerity party- but I am sure we can collectively think of a better name.

Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.
