Mandatory living wage is only fair way to end tax credits

Responding to David Cameron’s speech on tax credits, Salman Shaheen of Left Unity said:

“Cameron is preparing for yet another assault on people struggling to make ends meet, and this time tax credits are in the firing line.

“Tax credits are a lifeline for people on the breadline. But at the same time, they essentially subsidise low-paying corporations to exploit poor people.

“The only fair way to end tax credits is to introduce a mandatory living wage and do away with in-work poverty. Anything else will only make the situation far worse.”
