Leicester Left Unity – first meeting

Leicester Left Unity

Leicester Left Unity

Left Unity – Leicester had the first gathering on Tuesday 23 April 2013 at the Phoenix Cinema cafe, where some of us had seen Spirit of 45. We were around 20 people, and there was some good energy in the room for finding a way forward for positive change. We pooled ideas about what we consider to be the important issues. There were 67 different ideas which fell into 5 clear leading suggestions:
v The organisation & all Policies must be Left leaning
v People before Profit – this included a clear focus on Equality and challenging ‘isms’
– Supporting communities to take responsibility & ownership
v Social housing – including training
v Environment
v Ethical banking and renationalisation of National Resources

It was clear that across all topics the Prioritisation of Young People, particularly those not already engaged, is critical
It was also agreed
· Left Unity must operate inclusively to all ages and groups
· Our local group should affiliate to the National body
· A twitter account with #LeftUnityLeicester
· Sheila & Liz will attend the National meeting on May 11

As we see the latest growth figures for the UK standing at 0.25-0.30% when David Harvey and John Bellamy Foster say capitalism needs an average figure of 2.50-3.00% growth or capitalism has a realization crises which means not enough to generate the required return on capital to maintain the system. Hence the austerity measures and privatization which have been a feature of capitalism globally since the late 1970’s.

This is the class agenda of global finance capital, the IMF, WTO, World Bank, ECB and neo-liberal economic policies being implemented by the neo-conservative national governments across Europe including our Tory-Liberal coalition. The Labour Party lack the theoretical understanding required and have accepted the principles of a neo-liberal economy supported by a neo-conservative state/supra-state.

We therefore need an alternative left alliance with the European and Scandinavian left parties of the EL and GUE/NGL led by Pierre Laurent of the PCF and Gabi Zimmer of Die Linke. Left Unity hopefully will develop and grow to fill this vacuum in British politics with the support of activists from the broad left and labour movement.
