Left Unity in Milton Keynes held its first ever public information stall on Saturday 8th June in Wolverton. As there is no actual centre in Wolverton we pitched our stall outside the Coop where there was some good space next to the post box and cash machine. I was not expecting much form this first Left Unity information stall but how surprised i was from the very positive reaction of the people who passed the stall. You don’t get the foot fall you might get in other parts of Milton Keynes put those people who did pass our stall were happy to engage in conversation and were supportive for what we are trying to do – uniting the Left in a new democratic Socialist Party. Many people made a point of telling us how betrayed they felt by the Labour Party and that they felt no Party currently represented the working man and woman.

This is the content of the leaflet we used on side 1 (side two contained details of our Spirit of 45 film show in June and branch meetings up till August).
“Why Left Unity?
Working people across Europe are seeing their living conditions deteriorate as governments try to make them pay for an economic crisis which is not of their making. Europe is going into a deeper economic crisis as the so called “austerity” policies fail.
Here in the UK we are seeing cuts to our Public and Social Services (hospitals, schools, community services, council budgets, house building projects, libraries, housing and other benefits) all leading to increased unemployment as well as increased poverty, hunger and even death.
Meanwhile those who have created this economic crisis are holding onto and increasing their share of wealth. They are aided and abetted by the government which cut their taxes and allow them to take millions of pounds worth of bonuses, shares and dividends whilst avoiding paying their true share of taxation unlike the ordinary man and woman in the street. All the main political parties, including the Labour Party, agree with this approach to the economic crisis. They are all agreed that the poor must pay to maintain the lifestyle of the rich.
Across Europe new political groupings have been formed which bring together a range of Socialist minded people who are opposed to the austerity measures of low pay, cuts, privatisation of public services, pension age increase, frozen pay and so much more. Here in the UK we too need to form a Socialist political party that can express an alternative view to the big business view of all the current main political parties (the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrat Party and far right UKIP Party).
Attacks on our living standards and working conditions are intensifying and the welfare state is being destroyed. We need to work together in order to give a voice to an alternative to austerity.
Join Left Unity and be part of the formation of this alternative.
Defend Public Services.
Defend all Jobs.
No Cuts.
No Privatisation.

We will be working on another more public friendly version of this leaflet for our next stall – less wordy and a picture/logo (were are the graphic artists when you need them!) or two but it was the best we could come up with in the time we had and with the money I had!
I think that we here in Nottingham should also be doing this kind of campaigning … and will suggest it at our next meeting.
Inspiring and useful to see some of the things that you have done to develop and build Left unity, hoping to do something similar in our group
