Greetings to the Transform conference this weekend

Felicity Dowling writes: Left Unity is proud to play its part in the huge protests (and in the vital discussions) against the war on Gaza and the unspeakable crimes and cruelty it has unleashed. These protests show the potential scale of an opposition in this country.

Left Unity protests the hunger imposed on children in the UK, protests the destruction of public services, the housing crisis and the blatant robbery of the NHS, the neo-liberal budget announced this week.

Left Unity supports and welcomes the upsurge in trade union activity and organised community protests, against this government’s war on the poor.

The working class of this country are without effective political representation in a way not seen since the founding of the Labour Party. The Labour Party has been captured by neo-liberalism, and US foreign policy. Internal democracy seems to have disappeared.

Left Unity is an internationalist party and we recognise the crisis in socialism in Europe as well as here in the UK. We are resolutely anti-racist, opposing islamophobia, and antisemitism, and opposing GRT discrimination. We support the free movement of people.

We recognise the structural effect austerity has on women’s lives.

We recognise the danger of an upsurge from the Right.

The working class must find a way of gaining political organisation and representation. To this end we work with other organisations with similar aims. A new party of the working class will come from huge movements and deep involvement from communities, workplaces and campaign groups. Electoral politics alone are not enough. There must also be community involvement.

There is huge work to be done to achieve this aim. Left Unity will continue to work with groups and individuals who share our aims regarding working-class organisation and political representation.

Many of us cannot take part in the Transform conference this weekend because of the war on Gaza.

We send comradely greetings and best wishes for a positive meeting that leads to growth. Left Unity will continue to work cooperatively in campaigns and in political discussions, with the coalition of groups organising against the war, with Transform, the For the Many Network,  PAL, Liverpool Community Independents, socialists who are leaving the Labour Party in disgust, in the fight for the NHS and in the Trade Unions.

In solidarity

Felicity Dowling, Co-National Secretary
