Our press release in support of the national demonstration
WHEN: Assembles 12noon, this Saturday (19 July)
WHERE: Outside Downing Street, London
Left wing political party Left Unity is supporting the national demonstration for Gaza this Saturday, alongside a raft of campaigning organisations and an expected tens of thousands of protesters.
Salman Shaheen, one of Left Unity’s principal speakers, said:
“Left Unity is supporting the national demonstration for Gaza on Saturday in the name of justice for Palestinians, freedom for Palestine and peace in the Middle East.
“All deaths are tragic, but it is quite clear this is an asymmetrical conflict between a nuclear power and a stateless, repressed people. One Israeli citizen has been killed, while the death toll of Palestinians in Gaza is now over 200. Israel claims it is defending itself, but what defence takes 200 times more lives than the offence?
“The British government and much of the British media has been every bit as asymmetrical in their support as the conflict itself. The only way to peace is for the West at large to take a much less biased approach.
“Governments should demand that Israel puts an immediate end to its occupation and settlement of Palestine. It is only through justice for the Palestinians that peace will ever be achieved.”

So does left unity have a position on palestine. Is this press release calling for immediate halt to israeli hostilities. What solution does it propose.
I get that its difficult but being a party implies left unity has a position. Classically for the left in britain, uncertainty about a position on ireland ( on sein fein and the peace procesd ) and taking a clear anti zionist / anti racist position against the state of israel
I sence the press release on gerry adams was uncritical of sein fein and this one could have been written by psc. I think that at least a position on ireland and palestine should be discussed on the leadership bodies that would structure the press releases.
