Left Unity national secretary Kate Hudson pays tribute to Fidel Castro.
Fidel Castro stood for the liberation of humanity: not only for his own country Cuba whose struggle for freedom from US imperialism he led and won alongside Che Guevara; but also for the peoples of the world fighting for self determination, freedom from colonialism and the right to choose political and economic systems based on equality not exploitation.
He was a towering figure of 20th century politics. The CIA tried and failed to assassinate him many times.
The role of Cuba in international solidarity has been remarkable – from fighting against the apartheid regime in South Africa to working with the Bolivarian republic of Venezuela to bring health care to the people. Nelson Mandela always acknowledged that apartheid was dealt a crushing blow by the intervention of Fidel Castro’s troops in Angola where they took on and helped defeat the South African defence force.
Cuba inspired a generation of anti-imperialist struggles in Africa and elsewhere. Cuba has the most highly educated population in Latin America and its free healthcare system is universally admired. It was the first country to respond to the appeal for help with the Ebola epidemic and has 50,000 trained medics working in other parts of the world.
As the world enters a dangerous period with the rise of the far right, Castro remains an inspiration in our work to unite and defeat this reactionary wave.

Hasta Siempre Fidel X
Hasta siempre comrade Fidel X
If we stand together there is nothing we can’t achieve. Alone we can do so little , but together we can do so much. United we will never be defeated, together stronger.
R.I.P. Fidel Castro Ruz
Hasta la victoria siempre = Ever onward to victory
Hasta la victoria commandante y compañero!
Il pueblo unido jamas sera’ vencido!
I remember, as a 14 year old, going to Venceremos Che & Castro support parties.

Years later I was asked (as Greenham woman) to give a talk at the LSE
I was an ok speaker & had lectured at Harvard etc
BUT when I got onstage I realized my teenage crush, Robin Blackburn, was in front row. I fell to bits. The worse most garbled load of rubbish tumbled from where I thought rationality dwelt. Every time I hear Castro mentioned my stomachs churns a little. And nothing to do with our mourned
Comrade. Of course he had his faults; he was in the hands of Jesuits for a while! I don’t want to beatify him, just say thanks mate
