Earth First! Occupy Cumbrian Coalmine!

Fig. 1 – Earth First! raises the bar on climate action!!

Left Unity sends greetings and solidarity to the activists of Earth First! who have stepped up the action against the proposed new coalmine in Cumbria by occupying the site! This is part of their Summer Gathering 2023 – and, amongst other things, there’ll be workshops on nvda.

They’ll be there until Monday 4 September, so Left Unity urges its members and supporters – and all those concerned about the ever-worsening Climate & Ecological Crises – to pay them a visit over the coming weekend.

For those not local, there are 2 main ways of getting there:

Train: There’s a train station at Whitehaven. From there, you can bike; or there’s either a No. 2 bus that leaves from opposite Wilko, which drops off near the site; or you can catch a taxi from Morrisons (£6).

Car: Please car-share wherever possible. The easiest way – whether you’re travelling from the south or the north, is to get onto the A595, signed Whitehaven. Stay on that road until you see a road off [R., if travelling from the north; or L;, if travelling from the south], signed: ‘St. Bees/Sandwith’ – this is Mirehouse Raod. Travel along this until you meet the B5345: turn L. onto St. Bees Road; then, almost immediately, take the first R. onto Wilson Pit Road. The coalmine site is on the L., just after West Coast Composting (Wilson Pit Yard).

With the ‘record-breaking’/ wildfires in Greece having just been declared as the largest EVER in Europe – and similarly ‘unprecedented’ floods AND droughts across large parts of China, it clearly is: ‘No Time for a Coal Mine’!

Just Stop Oil – Slow Marches

Slow marches are still legal (so LOW RISK of arrest), and are extremely effective. The plan is to keep up the pressure on this ecocidal government to stop all new fossil fuel licences.
