Responding to the Tories’ plans to make it more difficult to strike, Left Unity trade union officer Oliver New said:
“This Tory government was elected on 37% of the vote. If you include turnout, as they want to for union ballots, they got less than a quarter of the vote.
“For them to demand that the trade unions meet a higher threshold for strike ballots than David Cameron met to get into government is just hypocrisy.
“The new business minister Sajid Javid is a Thatcherite banker who is in no position to lecture us about democracy.
“The right to strike will be essential to defend ourselves under another five years of austerity and growing inequality. That is why we must defend it.”
