‘An all too rare victory for the people of Haringey’ Keith Flett
Haringey TUC, the North London Trades Council, has said that credit is due to Haringey Council leader Claire Kober and lead Councillor Alan Strickland after a Banksy stencil ‘Slave Labour’ removed from the wall of a Poundland store in Turnpike Lane last week and listed at a Miami auction house for £450,000 was dramatically withdrawn from sale tonight.
The Council had made representations to the Culture Secretary Maria Miller, the Mayor of Miami and the auction house that the Banksy which appeared during last year’s Jubilee celebrations belonged to the people of Haringey and should be returned rather than sold.
The removal of the Banksy is believed to be related to the owners of the property Wood Green Investments Ltd although they have not commented or confirmed this.
Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said this is an all too rare victory for the people of Haringey and the Council deserve credit. We now need to get the Banksy back from America and restored to its rightful place in the Borough
