Haringey says: ‘united against the cuts we can win’

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett reports from the anti-cuts meeting in Tottenham this evening.

A successful meeting in Haringey tonight called for a united campaign against the cuts. The meeting was organised by the local trades union council and it sent a powerful message that uniting the fight against Government cuts can bring hope to those who fear there is little they can do to stop relentless attacks on their communities and workplaces.

Around 200 trade unionists, anti-cuts and community campaigners heard from Carol Duggan a relation of Mark Duggan who was shot dead by police in Tottenham in August 2011, the journalist, broadcaster and author Owen Jones, Chair of the Defend the Whittington Hospital Coalition Shirley Franklin and UCU Lecturers Union Secretary at Tottenham College Jenny Sutton.

The meeting agreed to back a range of initiatives including a march to protest against cuts at the local Whittington Hospital on 16^th March and a 1000 Mothers march in Tottenham on April 23^rd to focus on the impact of Government benefit cuts on families.

Owen Jones was quite right – the meeting had a tremendous energy too it. By uniting a broad range of campaigners it focused the possibility of building a fightback against Government policies that can bring hope and dignity back into the lives of many ordinary people.
