Organising in the second Trump Era: discussing with the Democratic Socialists of America

With Megan Romer and Ashik Siddique, representatives of the Democratic Socialists of America

*NEW SPEAKER* Seema Syeda, co-author of Creeping Fascism

Trump’s second term in the White House unleashes a new and very dangerous phase in world history – first and foremost for so many communities in the US where millions are at risk from his policies: anti-migrant, anti-women, Islamophobic, anti-Trans, climate change denying – there are so many struggles of such a crucial nature ahead. And beyond the US itself, there is the grave danger of being plunged into the abyss of conflict.  In his victory speech, Trump said he was going to stop wars, not start them. But based on his track record and the ultra-hawks he’s putting in the State Department, the threat of war and nuclear confrontation looks higher than ever.

Looking at the wider implications, we can also see how Trump’s victory emboldens the far right internationally. Certainly Trump’s victory and open support for annexing the West Bank has already encouraged Netanyahu’s genocidal expansionism. And it’s impacting across Europe where far-right movements are vying for government in a number of countries; and here in Britain, where the so-called centre, politically, is moving to the right to accommodate Trump and Trumpism.

These developments will shape the political context – and our lives for years to come. For many, these developments will be a matter of life and death.

Now’s the time to analyse events and organise for change. We are delighted to welcome Megan Romer and Ashik Siddique, representatives of the Democratic Socialists of America, to discuss the election, what is happening now, and what we can do.

This meeting is supported by Transform.
