Hugo Daillan-Drissi from the Front de Gauche reports for Left Unity on Mélenchon’s visit to Tunisia
This week, Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the Front de Gauche visited Tunisia. The visit had been planned as a meeting with Chokri Belaïd, the leader of the Front Populaire, to discuss the political situation in Tunisia and to plan cooperation between the two organisations. However, before the visit took place, Chokri Belaïd, was assassinated. Jean-Luc Mélenchon decided to continue with the visit and to pay tribute to this great man. Belaïd was the protector of the poor of Tunisia, the defender of freedom.
First Mélenchon went to the cemetery to lay flowers and to say goodbye. Later he met Chokri Belaïd’s wife, Basma Belaïd, to show solidarity. Finally Jean-Luc Mélenchon had a meeting with the Front Populaire where the Tunisian situation was discussed and cooperation agreed between the Front Populaire and the Front de Gauche.
Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.
