“The election of Viktor Orban with an increased majority in Hungary is a dark day for both Hungary and Europe. His blend of nationalism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism is a toxic mix which has influenced the Far Right across Europe. No wonder that his election victory was greeted by the Front National in France as a victory for all of Europe’s Fascists! His refusal to accept refugees and his blatant flouting of EU laws on freedom of speech and assembly have been taken up with gusto by neighbouring Poland and both states have formed an authoritarian bloc at the heart of Europe, to be possibly joined soon by the Czech Republic.
“The EU seems powerless to act against him but this is mainly because the European People’s Party, the main conservative bloc in the European Parliament protects him as his party, Fidesz is a member. Indeed his election victory was greeted by the Bavarian CSU, along with Boris Johnson.
“Left Unity will campaign vigorously, as part of the European Left Party, to oppose the xenophobic and reactionary policies of Orban and his government for a Europe where Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and populist authoritarianism are banished to the dustbin of history.” – Joseph Healy, Principal Speaker
