Defend Lewisham Southwark College Campaign

Brad Atkinson from Lewisham Left Unity reports.

There were 20–30 people at a loud and lively lobby of the Lewisham Southwark College governors on Tuesday, who were making decisions on the proposed cuts of staff, student services and shutting down of Camberwell campus.

We assembled outside the entrance with banners and placards – there were a mixture of teachers, students and people from the community. A choir came along singing union songs and people joined in, also there were speeches, all raising the need to resist the ideological attack on further education.

The crowd moved to the back entrance where the governors were meeting, and so we cranked up the music and chanted loudly. People were banging on pots and pans. This all made it into an energetic and lively lobby that attracted locals nearby to come out and show support.

The campaign continues with a public meeting at St Giles Church, Camberwell, Wednesday 10 June at 7.30pm. Further news on strikes to come.
