Ken Loach supports Ritzy cinema strike

LUpressreleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ken Loach, the award-winning film director and one of the founders of Left Unity, is supporting a strike by workers at the Ritzy cinema in South London today.

Ken Loach said: “Everyone has the right to a living wage. It is sad and shocking that the Ritzy Cinema, which has an image of being radical and progressive, should fail to do this. It is hypocritical to sell fair trade coffee and then not pay a fair wage.

“Come on, Ritzy management, don’t ask the people who work for you to subsidise your business. Pay the London living wage!”

Left Unity has sent a message of solidarity to the strikers and a donation to the strike fund. Supporters will join the picket line today (1 May) from 6.30pm.

We need to put pressure on Labour to start doing the right thing. Thatcher, Blair and the right wing press have made the word socialist unacceptable but this is just an illusion. The working classes are fast realising a socialist country cares more for them than a rabid right wing out of control capitalist one does. There are no benefits for a poor person in the rich becoming ever richer.

Fair trade coffee with a side of starvation wages really sums up what the radical chic self-proclaimed “Left” (which is actually just another brand of Right) is all about: promoting “cosmetic” rights, aka highly visible issues that don’t really challenge the status quo and therefore sidelining the real issues, to defend the status quo.

Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.
