What Price Democracy?

glasgowthumbMel Kelly of Glasgow Left Unity makes the case for a vote for Left Unity

Our grandfathers and great grandfathers stood shoulder to shoulder against the corrupt and greedy of other nations to ensure democracy and the wealth of our nation was preserved for future generations – standing up to those who wanted to pilllage our country and enforce dictatorship on our people.

They fought, died and worked to preserve democracy, freedom and wealth for all of us – winning two wars with politicians and the nation then working together to build an NHS for all, a DWP for all, British Airways, British Steel, British Rail, British Gas, British Coal, National Electricity network, National Road Network, Britain wide Bus Network, Royal Mail, Social Housing, Schools, Colleges, Universities, nursing homes, National Savings Bank and much, much more – for all – where we all shared the power, the ownership, the work and the wealth just as we shared the war experiences together..

But then a new breed of “politician” came to the fore – a greedy breed with no shared experience with the nation – a breed who went in to politics purely to “help themselves” and “their friends”.

Since 1979 politicians at all levels, across every party, have been helping themselves and their friends to sieze our inheritance – standing for election not to serve but to steal – and while the nation and government coffers have been raided to the point of bankruptcy – a few – the 1% with connections to the politicians and their parties – have gotten mighty rich as a result – with these politicians tricking the nation out of British Gas, British Steel, British Airways, British Rail, Royal Mail, Ports, Buses, Colleges, Social Housing and much more – including electricity generation and water.

The asset stripping of the nation since 1979 has now descended to such a level since the coalition came to power they are now even stealing schools, what’s left of Social Housing, police stations, fire stations and even hospitals.

And not content with just stealing the assets from the nation – Tory, Liberal, Labour and SNP politicians have signed deals with “their network of friends” which force present and future generations of taxpayers to pay £370 BILLION (and rising) PFI debt – for infrastructure worth just £60 billion – where we have been signed up to pay over 6 times the cost – but worse – we don’t own the infrastructure – all to ensure when they are finished stripping us of state infrastructure and democracy – there is no way we can ever afford to bring it back.

How can you pay to rebuild infrastructure you own – if you are paying the debts for infrastructure someone else owns for the next 30 years – thanks to Labour, Tory, Liberal and SNP politicians.

And while they now force the nation to its knees – using austerity as their weapon – no different to Hitler’s tanks pointing at us – the same politicians sign contracts which divert taxpayers money from government and local councils to the boardrooms of companies owned by foreign nationals, boardrooms that avoid paying tax on the profits of our democracy, shaking hand with each other and their boardroom friends –- to ensure these same MPs can stand down from parliament and step into the same boardrooms – to rule Britain without them ever having to stand for election again – to ensure there is no democracy or accountability in Britain any more

Now Britain has become a country where there is no local democracy, where Westminster and Devolved Parliaments have stripped local councils of 80% of their power, where the entire criminal justice system in England is now a criminal justice supply chain under just about complete control of a private company, unaccountable to the people, G4S.

Thanks to Tory, Liberal, Labour and SNP politicians, Britain is now a country where unelected members of the House Of Lords, rather than councillors have complete control of our schools, where Students, like the nation are burdened with debt, where we cannot afford to heat our homes, where we cannot afford to buy food, where we cannot afford a roof over our head – where we line up for food parcels while the board rooms line up for contracts – funded by money meant to pay for public services.

Why?

If you cannot control how the nation will vote – at local and national elections – ensure the vote means nothing instead – privatisation of public services ensuring democracy is dead and we are dictated to by the Boardrooms of companies, owned by hedge funds ruled by people who don’t even live in Britain or pay tax on these “contracts to buy control of what used to be democracy”.

And with privatisation also comes the transfer of democracy from parliament to the stock market, as the companies with the contracts are bought and sold.

Yes the companies are scrutinised before they win a government contract – but no one stops the company being bought over by an American Hedge Fund or a rich dictator from South America once the contract has been awarded – why go to war with Britain when you can just buy over the companies with the contracts to sieze control – Hilter used bullets – foreign hedge fund managers use money – and thanks to MPs and MSPs – they have achieved what HIlter could not!

Is it too late – have our grandfathers died in vein – do we need to stand up and fight – against these corrupt politicians – against their private G4S Police forces and foreign owners of companies holding the contracts and complete control of this country?

We have but one election left – to take Britain forward in a new direction.

And now, just as after the second world war, the people of Britain find themselves at the same crossroads – do we continue to vote for parties that pillage – who are all deliberately taking us back to pre-war Britain living standards, as is happening now – with people queuing for food parcels with no fresh food in them, after doing a hard days work – or do we vote for a return to wealth, health and dignity for all?

Since 1979, Tory, Labour, Liberal and SNP politicians have all worked together, implementing the same privatisation, pillage, PFI, tax free profit agenda for nearly 35 years, systematically asset stripping this nation and got us to the mess we are in now – they have been tried, they have been tested, they have been judged – and we all now know – not one of these parties can be trusted any more.

Not one of these parties represents the people – but instead their own self- serving interests – to sell off and now brazenly give away taxpayers assets while forcing taxpayers to fund the private takeover of public services – which is – the private takeover of democracy – we don’t vote for the private boardrooms – but via contracts – they now run and control the country – with politicians ensuring these companies are accountable to no-one

They cannot control the way we vote – but the can ensure they retain power via boardrooms after they stand down –ensuring via privatisation contracts it does not matter how we vote any more

And as a nation we now feel – the parties are all the same – we feel cheated and lied to and betrayed – and we are right.

But there is now hope – and just as after the second world war – for the first time in 35 years we have a REAL alternative – we are at a crossroads- do we keep voting for politicians and parties who continually betray our trust – or do we finally break free

What price do we put on democracy?

Our grandfathers paid the price to preserve it with their lives

But at this crossroads – we don’t ask you to fight a war – we don’t ask you to pay with your life to defend this nation against those who pillage and want to destroy democracy

– all we ask is for is for you to help form a People’s Alternative – join us – you cannot trust the current politicians – but you can trust yourself and your neighbours.

Join with us – join us with your membership – join us with your votes at local, national and devolved elections – let us form a People’s Alternative.

Let us take the same step to the left our grandfathers took after the war

Should this nation continue to vote for parties that all represent the right – or like our grandfathers should we have the courage, the humility and the lack of greed to turn left at the crossroads that made this country one which provided power, wealth and health for all.

We don’t ask you to fight for your children’s future – we ask you to vote for your Children’s future – – – the time has come again to turn left at the crossroads – join and vote for Left Unity

Vote as our grandfathers and great grandfathers did – for wealth and health for all

Where the other parties will continue to privatise – Left Unity Will Nationalise

Where the other parties have made a mess – Left Unity will restore our NHS

Where the other parties have transferred benefits to private landlords – we will restore benefits for the people – that’s not welfare – that’s getting the policy benefits of the National Insurance you pay

While the other parties create tax loopholes – Left Unity will ensure Tax Collection

Vote to restore democracy and leadership instead of boardroom dictatorship

Vote to finally abolish the house of Lords – No more unelected cronies controlling our laws

While other parties protect the greedy – Left Unity will protect the disabled, the sick and the needy

Vote to restore democracy and power in the hands of the people, vote to take Britain Back to our Grandfather’s Dream – rather than Britain and her people on their austerity laden knees – while the rich plunder as they please

Vote For A Better Future – Vote To Be In It Together Again – Vote Left Unity

Our grandfathers were proud to establish the Left – because they knew for Britain it was best

Our grandfathers had a dream – time to end this nightmare – and do the right thing – turn left at this crossroad – Vote For Left Unity – Vote To Restore Democracy –

what price will we pay if we don’t change our vote – What price democracy – join us and vote for us – vote for a new bright future for you, your children and your grandchildren

Mel, this sounds like a rousing speech for us to give in every estate and outside every workplace and at every hustings (if they are ever resurrected) in the next General Election campaign. But in order to get to that stage, we need first to build LU branches and root oursleves in those same communities, so that we are not ‘outsiders’ holding a megaphone and talking to rather than with people.

We need to collect speeches like this to inspire people when the time is right.

What about Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers and Great Great Great Grandmothers?

This is an appalling, chauvinist, rant – the author obviously pines for the good old days of the British empire. ie,

“Our grandfathers and great grandfathers stood shoulder to shoulder against the corrupt and greedy of other nations to ensure democracy and the wealth of our nation was preserved for future generations – standing up to those who wanted to pillage our country and enforce dictatorship on our people.”

Going over the top to advance the predatory interests of British imperialism – what a model for socialists!

    Dear god help us …

I respect your opinions gentlemen and take them on board as the constructive critisism they are meant to be – all I can say in reply is many others (including aunts, sisters, nieces, pensioners, friends, neighbours, uncles) have read the words and took no chauvanistic or imperialistic meaning – just hope

I thank you for pointing out how the words could be interpreted as chauvanistic – but as a woman I can assure you I have not one chauvanistic or imperialistic bone in my body –

You demonstrate well how others could choose to twist the meaning of certain words to detract completely from the valid points

I defer to your experience and thank you for taking the time to read and care about how the article was written = as I know it is important to us all and I do not wish to detract from the collective goal we are all trying to achieve

Here is definitive evidence of the extent of the democratic deficit in this country, absolutely, relatively and in comparison to other OECD regimes:

    http://www.counterfire.org/index.php/theory/37-theory/14906-the-crisis-of-the-british-regime-democracy-protest-and-the-unions

The implications of this must be taken fully into account in the way we campaign around elections – it is crucial that we expose the ‘democratic’ system as THE central plank of our campaigning, both at election time and outside elections, too. We are a new party and this democratic deficit is what we need to emphasise to the working class.
