Left wing political party Left Unity has condemned the current attempted police eviction of the Occupy Democracy protest in Parliament Square as an “attack on democracy”.
Salman Shaheen of Left Unity said:
“Occupy Democracy was set up in Parliament Square to say that our democracy is broken – that we did not vote for sky-high tuition fees or endless war. Now the police are proving their point.
“Right now the police are kettling and arresting protesters and confiscating political banners. This is an attack on the right to protest and nothing short of an attack on democracy itself.
“The camp should be allowed to peacefully stay in Parliament Square this week as it had planned. The police action should desist immediately.”

Occupy is a very good initiative that will provide inspiration to the rest of the country, that democracy can be won back from those in Westminster. Despite the heavy handed presence of the police, the protesters are still there fighting for the right to protest. This hopefully will provide a spark to other activists to join them, and overturn the current ruling elite.
