Campaigners are planning to march across England this summer, following in the footsteps of the historic Jarrow marchers, this time in defence of the NHS.
The march, initiated by women in Darlington who go by the Twitter hashtag ‘#darlomums’, has seen more than 500 people register so far to walk anything from a short stretch to the whole route.
Joanna Adams, one of the organisers, says: “At a time when armchair activism is the norm, emails are flooding in with offers to help organise, and to walk one or more of the legs of the route. The route is split up into sections of 10-15 miles making it easy for groups to join in.”
The march will leave Jarrow on 16 August and stop over in towns and cities along the 300 mile route. It plans to reach parliament in London on 6 September.

Just Stop Oil – Slow Marches
Slow marches are still legal (so LOW RISK of arrest), and are extremely effective. The plan is to keep up the pressure on this ecocidal government to stop all new fossil fuel licences.

Left Unity at national and local level needs to offer 100% support for this march and for us to do all we can to support it. This needs discussing at national and local level (contact needs to be made with the organisers at national level – we need to be sensitive to the fact that we are offering support, its not our protest but one we support and want to offer help to). The fight to defend the NHS is a fight against austerity and privatisation and raises so many other issues about the importance of public services for all and the need to both protect and extend them and how this can best come about.
I agree with you Neil, let’s get behind this campaign. I’ve just registered with 999 March for the NHS and offered to volunteer to help with organising and publicising the new crusade. I live in Sunderland so I’ll be in Jarrow on the day supporting this march on parliament.
HELLO,
THE CONSERVATIVES ARE USING THE SAME TACTICS AS THEY USED ON THE MINERS,BUT THIS TIME TO PRIVATISE THE N.H.S. FIRST PUT PRESSURE ON STAFF BY LOADING THEM WITH PAPER WORK,TAKE MONEY FROM HOSPITALS GIVE IT TO G.P.S.ETC. THEN THEY CAN SAY IT ISN’T WORKING,AND SO PRIVATISE. THEY TELL US THAT THE HEALTH SERVICE IS SAFE IN THEIR HANDS,THEY ARE LIARS THE LOT OF EM, REMEMBER WHAT THATCHER SAID ON TV? “WHAT HIT LIST,THERE ISN’T ONE”.BUT IT HAS BEEN PROVED THERE WAS.
