The Executive Board of the European Left Party meeting today agreed the following statement. It has been endorsed by the NC of Left Unity

The situation of Catalonia’s conflict requires dialogue and democratic political solutions.
The detention of Catalonian public officials, the banning of political meetings and events police raids on printshops and media offices, the impounding of magazines, prohibition of political campaigning and the storming of the autonomous government buildings are destroying community life and the essential underpinnings of democracy and are creating a worrying state of emergency.
We call on the Spanish government to open dialogue with the Catalan government and all the political agents to seek democratic political solutions to Catalonia’s conflict. Solutions that allow the citizens to decide their future through an agreed referendum
We also call on the Spanish government to cease its politics of repression, as these policies threaten fundamental freedoms that are the foundations of democracy. The government should not stop the free expression of Catalonian citizens on October 1st

Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.
