Left Unity condemns ‘arrogant’ budget

Following Chancellor Philip Hammond’s Budget today, Left Unity Principal Speaker Felicity Dowling said:

“There was arrogance and impunity from the Conservative government in today’s Budget as they continue to rob public services, to penalise the poorest and to dismiss the need for increased wages.

With austerity set to continue until 2025, there is not enough money provided for the NHS or enough to impact on Social Care. With no extra money provided for local authorities, horrific cuts will continue.

There will be no money for ordinary schools, just for the vanity free school project. The poorest will deliberately be made poorer and the appalling benefit system will become continuously more oppressive. The huge poverty facing so many is just being ignored.

There was no money identified to help the automotive industry or other key industries and no major infrastructural development.

There was no money for housing. No investment in dealing with the disastrous problems of climate change and air pollution.

This Budget penalises working people as wage freezes in the public sector continue and those who have been forced into self-employment through under-employment are now facing an increase in national insurance.

Corporations though continue to be privileged.

This Budget is a disaster for ordinary people, profits only the rich, and will further undermine our economy.

Only organised resistance can stop this government.”

  1. John Pearson says:

Some good points in this critique of the budget but, an important weakness. It is not “our” economy. The corporations, companies and financial institutions are privately owned.

We need to fight for socialism – social ownership of the economy; democratic workers’ control of enterprises; and substantive equality. There are no shortcuts.

Slow marches are still legal (so LOW RISK of arrest), and are extremely effective. The plan is to keep up the pressure on this ecocidal government to stop all new fossil fuel licences.
