It’s simple: renationalise rail now

Responding to Labour’s planned announcement that it will let a state operator bid for rail contracts, Bianca Todd from Left Unity said

“From the left’s point of view, Labour is still on the wrong track. The party seems to be scared of the word ‘renationalisation’.

“Private rail has been a massively expensive failed experiment. Prices have soared but the money has gone into the pockets of private companies instead of being used to improve services.

“If there was anything like a ‘level playing field’ then the private rail firms would not exist. The companies get back far more in subsidy from the government than they pay for the contracts. We are literally paying for their profits and it’s got to stop.

“The railways should be fully renationalised – now.”

    Re – nationalise our railways

The private operators act like housing:only using 7 or so coaches behind locos able to pull 12, to cut their costs while people have to stand for hours, which drives people away unless they have to use the train! Those with no choice pay the high fares, so profit rates are ensured. Nationalisation would open the door to genuine mass transit, with new tracks around bottleneck stretches of track, locos pulling to full capacity & a seat for everyone.

Left Unity is active in movements and campaigns across the left, working to create an alternative to the main political parties.
